Dr Lorna Olckers
PhD MPhil BSocSc (SW) Hons (UCT)
I am a registered Social Worker with a PhD in Public Health and Family Medicine from the University of Cape Town. I began my professional career as a Social Worker in the non-profit and private sectors working in mental health, child and adolescent care, and education before moving into academia. I was a lecturer for over twenty years at the University of Botswana and University of Cape Town where I convened courses on professionalism, interpersonal skills development, reflective practice, and health and human rights. In 2019 I graduated with my PhD and set up my own Private Practice to assist and support individuals, couples, groups and organisation in navigating some of life’s major events.
Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and in line with my commitment to community involvement, I have participated extensively in case and contact tracing, and bereavement and supportive counselling under the auspices of the Western Cape Department of Health.
Building on my prior relationship with the University of Cape Town, I have joined various Covid19 research initiatives.
I also collaborate with Milkwood, a lawyer-led multi-professional practice, assisting couples to draw up meaningful relationship contracts that reflect their values and hopes for the future. See website – www.milkwoodlaw.co.za
In my spare time, I am a passionate reader and enjoy hiking and exploring our beautiful country with family and friends!
